WooCommerce: What is it? Is it Free?

WooCommerce is a free software that allows WordPress users to sell products or services directly from their own website.

It is one of the best WordPress ecommerce solutions for building and growing an online business.

It became hugely popular due to its flexibility and simplicity, as well as the variety of free and premium add-ons and a massive developer community. It is a dominating force in the global ecommerce world and accounts for over 20% of the total market share as of 2023.

In this post, we’ll take a look at the WooCommerce history, as well as its pros and cons as an ecommerce software.

WooCommerce: Enable Payment Gateway Only for “Order Pay Checkout”

I invoice clients via WooCommerce, and then send them the “Invoice Email”, which takes them to the “Order Pay” page. Of course, I want to give them the option to pay via “Bank Transfer” (bacs), but I don’t want this to be visible on the default checkout page.

WooCommerce: Set Default Billing City (or other fields) @ Checkout

We’ve already seen how to set the default values for certain dropdowns (billing country and state, precisely). But what can we do when we want to define the defaults for the other “text” inputs, such as the billing_city?

WooCommerce: Add House Number Field @ Checkout

A North European client told me they’re really strict about billing and shipping addresses over there. Couriers usually require a separate “House Number” in order to dispatch packages within those countries.

This must be therefore placed on the checkout, BESIDE the “Address_1” field and made required. Also, it’s a good idea to make this show in the Admin Order, thank you page and notification Emails.

WooCommerce: How to Add a Custom Checkout Field

Let’s imagine you want to add a custom checkout field (and not an additional billing or shipping field) on the WooCommerce Checkout page. For example, it might be a customer licence number – this has got nothing to do with billing and nothing to do with shipping.

Ideally, this custom field could show above the Checkout page order notes – right after the shipping form. It will feature a label, an input field, and will be required.

So, here’s how you do it – hope it helps you understand that anything is possible with WooCommerce!

WooCommerce: Disable Postcode/ZIP Validation @ Checkout

An annoying thing for sellers based in Ireland (for example), is that we still don’t use post codes (they recently introduced them, but nobody’s using them). So, in today’s task, I want to show you how to disable the “REQUIRED” feature of the postcode on the checkout page.

WooCommerce: Disable Payment Method If Product Category @ Cart

Today we take a look at the WooCommerce Checkout and specifically at how to disable a payment gateway (e.g. PayPal) if a specific product category is in the Cart.

There are two tasks to code in this case: (1) based on all the products in the Cart, calculate the list of product categories in the Cart and (2) disable a specific payment ID if the target product category is in the Cart.

WooCommerce: Change Input Type @ Checkout Fields

This challenging task (yet very simple at the end) was requested by one of my US clients. As they trade in the USA only, they wanted to force “numbers only” in the ZIP input field, so that letters would not be allowed. And WooCommerce doesn’t do this out of the box.

WooCommerce Visual Hook Guide: Single Product Page

Here’s a visual hook guide for the WooCommerce Single Product Page. Now that you know the product page hooks, you can override the WooCommerce Single Product Page via your child theme’s functions. You can remove default elements (for example, the featured image, the add to cart form, related products…), you can add your custom elements by picking the correct positioned “hook” and triggering your function, and you can even “move” existing elements. WooCommerce Visual Hook Guide: Cart Page (Shortcode Version)

I’ve put together a visual hook guide for the shortcode-based WooCommerce Cart Page (you can find the block version here).

Please note – as of the date above, you can’t add any customization to the Cart Block yet (unless you find a workaround), so you’d better revert to the shortcode version in case you’re willing to personalize the Cart page, move elements around, hide default elements, add custom content, etc.

So, with this copy/paste hook document you can find WooCommerce Cart hooks quickly and easily by seeing their actual location.

The great thing is – all you need to do in your custom code is “add_action(‘hook_name’,’custom_function’);” and you can place your personalized content anywhere on the WooCommerce Cart Page.

WooCommerce: Show Message Upon Country Selection @ Checkout

If you have country-specific shipping conditions, or you want to show a message conditionally after country selection on the checkout page, here’s a simple WooCommerce PHP snippet you can freely use. This can be slightly customized to target state selection instead.

I’ve also edited the initial code to make this work on load as well, so that the message would conditionally show even then. Enjoy!
