WooCommerce: Search Orders By SKU @ Admin

Exactly. By default, when you search for orders in the WordPress > WooCommerce > Orders backend, using a SKU will give you 0 results. Which is pretty poor for a store manager.

Let’s change this. Despite the code is a little complex, all you need is a simple copy & paste. Enjoy!

Searching for “cwoo2” (a SKU) returns no orders. Pity, because “cwoo2” is one of my WooCommerce product SKUs.

PHP Snippet: Allow Search By SKU @ WooCommerce “Orders” Admin Page

/**
 * @snippet Search By SKU @ Orders Dashboard - WooCommerce
 * @how-to        Get CustomizeWoo.com FREE
 * @author        Rodolfo Melogli
 * @compatible    WooCommerce 6
 * @community     https://businessbloomer.com/club/
 */

add_filter( 'woocommerce_shop_order_search_results', 'bbloomer_order_search_by_sku', 9999, 3 );

function bbloomer_order_search_by_sku( $order_ids, $term, $search_fields ) {
	global $wpdb;
	if ( ! empty( $search_fields ) ) {
		$product_id = wc_get_product_id_by_sku( $wpdb->esc_like( wc_clean( $term ) ) );
		if ( ! $product_id ) return $order_ids;
		$order_ids = array_unique(
			$wpdb->get_col(
				$wpdb->prepare( "SELECT order_id FROM {$wpdb->prefix}woocommerce_order_items WHERE order_item_id IN ( SELECT order_item_id FROM {$wpdb->prefix}woocommerce_order_itemmeta WHERE meta_key IN ( '_product_id', '_variation_id' ) AND meta_value = %d ) AND order_item_type = 'line_item'", $product_id )
			)
		);
	}
   return $order_ids;
}

Once the snippet is active, and for the same search query as per the previous screenshot, here’s the result:

Searching for “cwoo2” now returns 15 results. Success!

Where to add custom code?

You should place custom PHP in functions.php and custom CSS in style.css of your child theme: where to place WooCommerce customization?

This code still works, unless you report otherwise. To exclude conflicts, temporarily switch to the Storefront theme, disable all plugins except WooCommerce, and test the snippet again: WooCommerce troubleshooting 101

  1. Do you have any updated code using HPOS?

    1. HPOS doesn’t really give us the chance to use wc_get_orders() with a “product_id” filter unfortunately. So, you’d need to either (1) get ALL orders and then loop through the array to see which orders contain a product or (2) change my SQL statements based on the new HPOS tables.

      I’m afraid this custom work – if you’d like to get a quote, feel free to contact me here. Thanks a lot for your understanding!

  2. Good morning, is it complicated to change from searching by SKU to order PRICE?

    1. Hi Bartosz, it’s quite doable for a WordPress developer, shouldn’t be a problem

  3. Hey Rodolfo!

    I’ve had this snippet in place for a few months now but it seems to have stopped working. Copied it and updated my snippet to make sure that it wasn’t a typo etc. Still, no luck.

    All products have SKUs, whether a variation, subscription, regular product etc.

    I’m also using the code snippets plugin, fyi.

    Thanks again for your help!

    1. Hi Jonathan that’s weird, the code it contains is very generic and nothing special. It should really work. Can you try on a different website maybe?

  4. Hi – I need help with something similar – we have an Amazon module that imports the Amazon order IDs to wp_posts table (column: post_excerpt) – so I need a snippet that shows me results from this table / column when searching backend orders – so we can search for those Amazon order IDs in orders. Any help is highly appreciated… we haven’t get it working so far. Thanks!!

    1. Hi Dasha, thanks so much for your comment! Yes, this is definitely possible, but I’m afraid it’s custom work. If you’d like to get a quote, feel free to contact me here. Thanks a lot for your understanding!

  5. This is not working for me. I get nothing. I tried returning something else than $order_ids; but still gives me nothing. Any help? Latest woocommerce and wp versions.

    1. Works for me. Do all products have a SKU?

  6. Not working for me. My SKUs are setup in Product Variations. Maybe that’s why I still can’t search by SKU. Would you know how to modify the code that I can search the variation SKUs in Orders admin?

    1. Try with this new version and let me know!

  7. Hi mate,

    It’s working! Is there a way to filter manually made orders in the Orders page?

    regards

    1. Hello Mat, thanks so much for your comment! Yes, this is definitely possible, but I’m afraid it’s custom work. If you’d like to get a quote, feel free to contact me here. Thanks a lot for your understanding!

  8. Hi there,

    The snippet works great. A quick question. How can I update this, so that it lists all items with a partial SKU?

    Meaning, for example I have an SKU of LS14350-1 and LS14350-2.
    Inputting LS14350 should output both.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Sandtren, thanks for your feedback, I thought this worked for partial SKU as well. Did you test already?
