Implementing a WooCommerce Pre-Launch Product Voting

Understanding customer demand is crucial for any business, especially when introducing new products. For WooCommerce store owners, gauging interest in upcoming products can help prioritize development and ensure that resources are focused on items with the highest potential.

A recent discussion in the Business Bloomer Club explored various approaches to implementing a pre-launch product voting system, allowing logged-in customers to express their interest and influence which products are brought to market first.

This post examines the different options discussed, considering ease of implementation, user experience, and overall effectiveness.

Exploring Different Voting Mechanisms

Several options were considered for implementing the voting system:

  • Contact Form: Disabling sales and add-to-cart functionality and replacing it with a contact form allows customers to express interest. While simple to implement, this method adds friction for the user and doesn’t provide a quantifiable measure of interest.
  • “Heart” Button: Similar to a wishlist plugin, a clickable heart icon allows customers to show their support. This approach is user-friendly and visually appealing, offering a simple way for customers to register their interest.
  • Upvote Form: A more structured approach involves an upvote form, allowing customers to select a number (e.g., from 1 to 10) to indicate their level of interest. While this provides more granular data, it can be more complex to implement and might feel less intuitive for users.
  • Star Rating System (Modified): Leveraging the existing WooCommerce product review system, but modifying it to function as a “+1” system instead of star ratings, was also suggested. This approach could be easier to implement since the review system is already integrated with WooCommerce.

User Experience Considerations

The discussion emphasized the importance of a smooth and intuitive user experience. Adding too much friction, such as requiring users to fill out forms, can discourage participation. A simple, one-click voting mechanism, like a heart button or a modified star rating system, is generally preferred for ease of use.

Ease of development is another important factor. Reusing existing WooCommerce functionality, such as the review system, can simplify the implementation process. However, it’s essential to ensure that the chosen method aligns with the overall design and functionality of the website.

Recommendations

The consensus among developers seemed to favor a simple and user-friendly approach, such as a clickable heart icon or a modified star rating system. These options provide a good balance between ease of use and the ability to gather valuable data on customer interest.

Avoiding complex forms and focusing on a seamless voting experience is key to maximizing participation and obtaining reliable feedback.
